Bandai-Asahi National Park

2015.04.21

Bandai-Asahi National Park is blessed with mountains, forests, and lakes. Visitors to the park can marvel at Mt. Dewa-Sanzan, which is famous as a site for mountain worship, gaze upon the Asahi and Iide peaks and Mt. Bandai, and enjoy the beautiful sights of hills and numerous lakes and marshes from vantage points in the Urabandai area and Lake Inawashiro. The park is home to antelopes, black bears, and other species of wildlife.

<Where to see>
◆Goshikinuma Ponds
Visitors can savor the intimate beauty of a landscape as seen from a 4-kilometer-long nature trail (that can be completed in 1 hour, 10 minutes) that has been built in the area of the Goshikinuma Ponds, whose waters convey mystical hues of cobalt blue, emerald green, and various other colors. Since the trail was made by harnessing natural topographic features, you should exercise care to avoid injuries and walk at your own risk.

◆Jododaira
A large number of nature trails have been built in Jododaira to allow visitors a chance to make a circuit of the crater atop Mt. Azuma-Kofuji, the symbol of this area, and spot a wide array of alpine flora, including Hypericum kamtschaticum var. hondoense and Orchis aristata plants, between June and August. Since the trail was made by harnessing natural topographic features, you should exercise care to avoid injuries and walk at your own risk.

◆Dewasanzan-Jinja
Dewasanzan-Jinja is the collective name given to a family of shrines established on the Dewasanzan peaks (consisting of Mt. Haguro, Mt. Gassan, and Mt. Yudono). Ideha Jinja Shrine is located on Mt. Haguro, Gassan Jinja Shrine is located on Mt. Gassan, and Yudonosan-Jinja Shrine is located on Mt. Yudono. Erected on Mt. Haguro, Sanjingosaiden is a hall where visitors can offer combined prayers to all the gods deified in these three shrines. At the end of August, ascetic monks belonging to the Dewasanzan-Jinja Shugendo and Hagurosan Shugendo orders engage in religious austerities known as aki-no-mine in the mountains for more than a week at a time.
