Check Red Buddha "Obinzuru" at Renkeiji temple in Kawagoe

Here at Renkeiji temple of the Jodo sect, there is the bright red Buddha standing out conspicuously upon entering the precincts.
The Rennkei temple has one of Sixteen Arhats(sixteen great disciples of Buddha) called Obinzuru, also known as stroked Buddha.
He helped the person who is handicapped or didease in the divine power, Chastened greedy people and curmudgeon, preached the teachings of Buddha to people who has worries in mind, and saved a lot of people.

It is said that if you stroke yourself with your hand which you touched the body of Obinzuru by, your disease heal and you become smarter. This is the origin of the stroked Buddha.
We repaint once every twenty five years because Obinzuru in Rennkei temple is stroked by a lot of people.
Here Renkei Temple which has Obinzuru is a Jodo temple Masashige Suruganokami built to pray for his mother, Renkeini in 1549.
This Renkei Temple has a fine bell and it's tolled just 18 times at 3:00 pm. (The number of 18 comes from a learning place of Jodo shu called Kanto Juhachi (18) Danrin.)
It's done for people's well-being not like hour bells tick.

Renkei Temple became one of the Kanto Juhachi Danrin in1602 and they raised a lot of monks studying Buddhism as a Shogunate official Buddhist monk institute allowed to use crests of hollyhock.
