“Nyuto Onsen”, the Spring Village Locates in Nature from the Edo era

2015.04.27

1. Summary
Nyuto spring village is one of the most famous hot spring areas in Japan, located in Senboku city, Akita. The village is composed by seven independent springs, all gathered close and the biggest feature of the village is that each springs has its own water source and they all have their own different spring qualities. By visiting this spring village, “the village of hidden springs within the deep nature”, we guarantee that you will experience the unique atmosphere that you won’t ever feel from other places. You can visit the village whichever way you like; maybe choose one spring only and concentrate on the beauty of the spring or maybe purchase a “spring ticket (1500 yen)” to visit several springs and feel the various pleasure of the village. Enjoy those special springs which have been gushing from the ancient times.

2. History, Culture
History: “Nyuto Onsen”, the spring said to be the oldest of the 7, is told today that it was discovered during the Edo era and that it was beloved by the former land lord (Akita clan) as a “toji-ba”.(*toji-ba: A type of sanatorium constructed in a hot spring area. People tried to cure their illness by staying at spring villages for a long period during the era where medical knowledge was insufficient. Back then springs were regarded as an effective way to cure diseases)

History of the name: In kanji, “Nyuto” means “nipple”. Before World War 2, the old rulers called the mountain which the spring is located at the foot, Mt.Nyuto due to the shape of the mountain which looked like the shape of a woman’s breast. Eventually, the spring itself was referred as “Nyuto Onsen”. (*quoted from an article by Asahi Newspaper. Date: 18th, October, 2008)

3. Spring quality, Body effect
At “Nyuto Onsen”, each 7 springs has their spring sources. Why not select a spring suitable for your body condition?
At the Tsurunoyu spring, there are four different springs within the area. They are “Hakuyu”, “Kokuyu”, “Nakanoyu” and “Takinoyu” and each springs features are different. “Hakyu” is called “the spring of beautiful skin” due to its effect of cleaning and moisturizing the human body skin. “Kokuyu” is also called as “spring of Nugudamari” (which means “warmness” in Akita region). As it is called, the salt containing hot water will help your body to maintain the warmness you’ve just gained from the spring while keeping you refreshed after you’ve finished bathing.
At the “Myounoyu Onsen”, your body can relax greatly, due to the high level concentration of Calcium and Magnesium within the hot water. The hot water here is highly effective for “arteriosclerosis” and “high blood pressure”. Also, it is said to be effective for skin disease such as “pimples” and “eczema”.
“Kokuyu Onsen” is a spring that contains Sulphur element within the hot water, making it have its unique aroma. It is effective for promotiing blood circulation within the human body so it is said to cure “arteriosclerosis”, “high blood pressure” and “peripheral circulatory disturbance”. (*Sulfur springs can be harmful depending on the person’s body constitution. Please be aware when trying this spring.)
“Kaniba Onsen” is a carbonated-water spring containing Natrium within the hot water. The element is said to be effective of dissolving keratain collagen within the human body skin which is regarded to be effective for “skin disease”.
“The Magoroku Onsen ” is a spring containing “radon gas”, making it effective for promoting renal function. Also, it is regarded that springs with radon gas is effective for “gouts”. (*Please be aware that taking long hours of bath in radon gas spring can lead to dizziness. Be sure to take some rests while bathing.)
“Ogama Onsen” is effective for “rheumatism” and an “athlete’s foot”.
Finally at the Kyu-ka Mura , the hot water here contains sulfur so it is similar to “Kuroyu spring”. It has unique aroma but it is said to be effective for blood circulation within the human body.

4. Comment from the spring sommelier
Nyuto Onsen is one of my favorites. Of course the various qualities and effects are very fascinating, but the best part is the feeling that you can experience once getting into the spring. You can feel your whole body being combined as one with the majestic nature surrounding you. Also, you can enjoy the tasty Japanese food such as edible wild plant dishes and Kiritanpo in Akita. “Nyuto spring village” is a place you must go when visiting Japan.
