Japanese sword (KATANA) forging demonstration in Shimane
IntroductionJapan the land of the samurai, and their signature item the Katana is something that is known all over the world. With this experience you will able to learn about forging of a Katana from a famous swordsmith whose family has a long history of Katana making since the Edo period! (1603 - 1868)
Did you know that for a samurai, the most important thing next to their life is their sword, the katana. Mr. Kobayashi a local swordsmith in the Shimane Prefecture will be showing and teaching you about the ways of the katana. During the forging he will be showing you a special technique the "Orikaeshi Tanren". This technique is special for forging a katana sword where the metal will be folded and forged many times. The sword would be heated then allowed to cool without hammering, and by ding so it keeps the desired properties of strength and flexibility to the sword.
Legends says that the first Japanese sword was made when the great diety Susanoo cut teh great serpent Orochi's tail, which became the katana "Kusanagi-no-tsurugi." Of course with time the sword underwent many changes with its shape and composition. The arch-shaped that the katana is famous for is known that it "wont break, won't bend, and it cuts well".

Reservations may be cancelled without charge up to 7 days prior to the program date.
Reservations cancelled less than 6 days before the program date will incur the following charges:
- Between 6 days and 3 days: 50% of the program charge
- Less than 2 day or no show: 100% of the program charge
