Visit NIKKA Whiskey Distillery and Yamadera Temple from Sendai
IntroductionThis is a 1-day guided tour to visit Yama-dera (Risshaku-ji temple) and Nikka Whisky Distillery with a local guide. You will departs from Sendai station and concludes at Sendai station.
◆About Yama-dera temple (Risshaku-ji temple)
Risshaku-ji was built on the top of the mountain about 1,200 years ago. It is listed in a nationally-designated important cultural property as the oldest beech wooden structure.
It is said that one desire disappears in each climb one step, and you will climb 108 steps for purify your body. Thereafter another 907 steps will be waiting for you! After climb 1,015 steps totally for taking about 30 minutes, you will admire the beautiful view from the top.
The temple and the town’s view from the mountaintop is just magnificent.
Besides, as religious belief in this area, people carved a stone monument to a rock wall of the mountain for a memorial service. That’s why you can find some hollows on the rock wall. However, there is the special hollow called ‘midahora.’ It is said that happiness will come for you when you see the hollow like a shape of Buddha.
◆About Nikka Whisky Sendai Factory Miyagikyo Distillery
Nikka Whisky Sendai Factory Miyagikyo Distillery is surrounded by a deep forest and two rivers.
It has 200,000 kilometer squares and was founded in 1969 in Miyagikyo as the second distillery of Nikka Whisky.
Masataka Taketsuru, who is called ‘A father of Japanese whisky,’ greatly achieved Japanese whisky community as the first factory manager of Yamazaki which is one of the best Japanese whisky nowadays. Since then, he established Nikka Whisky to make high quality Japanese whisky.
Takettsuru is the origin of his name and well-known as an important whisky of Nikka Whisky. Malt whisky with a simple still and grain whisky with a continuous still are made in this distillery.
Observation will be conducted in Japanese, but your guide will translate into English.
After a factory tour, you will have a chance to taste three different kinds of whiskey (complimentary).
You can also enjoy aging whiskey at a bar at your expense. (A half shot of whisky: around 400 yen)
8:30am Pick up at a hotel in Sendai (or meet at Sendai Station with a guide)
- Move to Yamadera temple, go on a hike and have a lunch
- Visit Nikka Whisky Distilling and taste three different types of whiskey
4:00pm Tour concludes at Sendai Station (Hotel drop-off upon request)
