Yuki-Tsumugi Authentic Kimono Craft Town Tour from Tokyo
IntroductionWalk around Yuki city, well known for "Yuki-Tsumugi", a fine silk and kimono craft!
This is a one day walking tour from Tokyo. Yuki city is just 90 minutes away from central Tokyo.
You can find authentic Japanese product and cultural experience in this unknown place to most tourists.
Many people think of silk as something smooth and shiny, but Yūki-tsumugi is a little bit different and unique. Although Yūki-tsumugi is woven by silken threads, it is a luxury fabric that has rough texture.
The texture of the finest quality Yuki-tsumugi is the product of many master artisans’ extraordinary handiwork.
Carefully hand crafted through 40 different small processes by artisans,“Yuki-tsumugi, Silk fabric production technique” has been listed by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage since 2010.
They are hand woven in "Jibata"(a loom with no legs) and the designs are small crosses of splash patterns. Warm, light, tough and free from wrinkles, the fabric does not fade or discolor easily, but increases its luster the more frequently it is washed and stretched.
In this tour, a friendly assistant will take you to Yuki city in Ibaraki Prefecture. Get a chance to experience Japanese authentic hand-made kimono, Yuki-Tsumugi, and enjoy local town walking. If you do not feel comfortable wearing kimono, please choose "without Kimono option", although kimono made by the technique of "Yuki-Tsumugi" is very light and comfortable.
Once you start walking the town, you can enjoy town walking, where old Japanese warehouses,"Kura",built in over 200 years ago still remain. At one of the Kura, Tsumugi-no Yakata, you will also learn about Yuki-Tsumugi and experience Japanese traditional plant dyeing or weaving by a loom. One of the artisans will help you make your original coaster, or dye eco-bag, handtowel, or bandana.
As artisans do not speak English, your assistant will translate what artisans say in English.
After having lunch, proceed the town walking until 2:30PM and come back to Yuki Station.
If you choose to wear kimono, do not need to bring anything yourself. Everything you need for kimono is prepared at Yuki Station and all you need to do is change your clothes. A member of local Kimono Association will help you wear kimono comfortably, and you will look great in your kimono. They will keep your clothes and luggage until you finish town walking and come back to the station.
Okujun was established in 1907 as Kimono maker and wholesaler and cultivated its reputation throughout a century mainly among domestic Kimono Industry.
